I'm in Albania this week! Soaking up some sun and sea salt I’m back at the ocean in the country of Albania. This country is an up and coming destination that is still rough around the edges but the ocean is spectacular and it was so good to get my body in the salt water of the ocean again. After coming from the capital city Tirana where my hotel had a Salt Room to the beach town of Sarande has inspired me to write about something most people don’t think about in a healing way, SALT THERAPY! It’s long been said that the sea and mineral salt has healing qualities. Thalassotherapy gets its name from the Greek word “thalassa,” meaning sea or ocean. The practice has been used in Europe for centuries, dating back to the Roman Empire when soldiers used hot seawater baths to recuperate after battles. Hippocrates began recommending salt inhalation as a respiratory treatment and would use natural salt and water on the skin to cure skin diseases as far back as 460BC! Salt Room in Tirana, Albania The ocean water is not achievable for some but you can still benefit from the healing benefits of salt every single day! You can use salt daily as an oral rinse, nightly in your bath and of course sea salt on your food is an excellent. The use of Himalayan Salt Lamps do not appear to give off the necessary negative ions for true health but they are soothing to look at and still love them so use them if you have them! Salt is a vital ingredient of cell health; in its purest form it contains 84 elements and trace elements found in the human body and affects cell activity, energy and blood sugar levels in a positive way! The negatively charged ions in Himalayan salt are thought to improve our health and mood so bathing every night in a mineral salt bath will do wonders for you health! Try my recipe for bath salts below that I used for my students at Okanagan College during the Aromatherapy Classes I taught! I included the downloadable file for you to save and try out the recipe! Just click the download file to save it! ![]()
To reap the benefits of any therapy it is all about consistency. Keep sea salt in your salt shaker for your meals, do the oral rinse with salt every night by keeping salt and a glass in your bathroom so you remember to do it! Aim for the mineral salt baths as many nights as you can and use this recipe for kids too. They might not like the seaweed sprinkles so use flowers or nothing at all but I find everyone can use the cleansing properties of mineral salts and Epsom salts to clear energy and combined with the healing drops of essential oils will do amazing things for the mind, body and spirit. Thank you for following my journey to writing a book series!
