April 24 How to eat Breakfast…what??? If you follow me you know that I am not a fan of “Breakfast” but this is about is not “Breakfast” in the traditional way. I am talking about “breaking your fast” hence where the English word “Breakfast” comes from. Breakfast is meant to be the first meal of the day after giving your body a huge break from eating while we sleep. Hopefully you are sleeping at least 8-10hrs where you are not eating in that time frame. So when you eat something after you wake up you are technically “breaking your fast”. Now here is where things change. In the past we were told to eat breakfast as soon as we wake up. We were told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and YES absolutely, breakfast is important BUT the time you eat it is even more important! Think about this, when you eat, food goes into your mouth which is the start of digestion. Your saliva starts breaking down food, you swallow, more body parts are engaged, food hits your stomach and your body starts to do the heavy work of digesting, absorbing and eliminating. If this is all BEFORE you even start your day then you have already bogged down your body and your mind before your day has even started. DON’T DO THAT! JUST WAIT to eat… get up and move, get your brain and body using up stored fat as energy instead of the quick burning glucose our body loves. Unless you are an elite athlete, a growing child, or growing a child inside of you, you probably have some stored fat somewhere that can be used up by your brain and body so USE the stored FAT!!! It just makes sense doesn’t it? Plus the MOMENT you eat food, your body will crave more. Your body loves burning quick glucose energy, it's easy, it's fast, it gets the job done but don’t give in! Make your body work for it and wait until your body is HUNGRY and that could be 12noon before that happens. When it does, eat something that is nutrient dense, full of healthy fat for your brain, like this avocado stuffed with tuna salad. Breaking your fast with a piece of toast that will give your body quick burning glucose because in case you didn’t know bread, especially refined breads will just turn to sugar, your body will use it up and then BEG you for more. So then you will want more “sugar” food all day long and we don’t want that happening! So you can see not only when you eat it matters, what you eat for “breakfast” matters but that will have to be another blog! Bottom line is the longer you can go without feeding into those glucose cravings and narrowing your eating window to 4,6 or even 8 hour windows the more efficient your body will run and the healthier you will be. If you don’t believe you can do it, give yourself 10 days of waiting to eat. Just start with an 8 hour window, even 10hrs 8-6pm or 9-7pm just start somewhere and then go from there! You WILL feel better, I promise! Thank you for following my journey to writing a book series!
Stay balanced, LeeAnna
