July 24 - How to cook with sage leaves...adding herbs to your food! Week 3 of housesitting in France and forging herbs off the land! There are HUGE sage bushes in France! They are used like shrubs, they are that big! I love it and am cooking with as many herbs here as I can. I believe in growing our own food and herbs are a great place to start especially if you don’t have space since they are easy to grow in containers, like houseplants! Sage plants give the most beautiful blooms! With Trusted Housesitters I ended up staying here for most of the summer 2022 to write the book series! Sage is one of the most versatile herbs and can be used in SO many dishes so I’m focusing the blog on this herb but growing your own herbs and incorporating them will be another blog for sure! Sage is very high in vitamins and antioxidants and can be used for digestive problems, including loss of appetite, gas (flatulence), stomach pain (gastritis), diarrhea, bloating, and heartburn. It is also used for reducing overproduction of perspiration and saliva; and for depression, memory loss, and Alzheimer's disease. You can make sage tea but I prefer to cook with it! The herb is rarely, if ever, used raw, because its aroma and flavor is best released when cooked plus the herb is a little bit too pungent to be consumed raw. SAGE BUTTER My all time favourite way to use sage is to saute the leaves in a saucepan with butter and make a brown butter sage sauce for everything from potatoes, pierogies, gnocchi, pasta, ravioli, risotto, even drizzle the sauce on fish chicken! It will literally transform your dishes like you won’t believe! Adding sage or any herbs for instant adds instant flavor meats, sausages, beans and vegetables. The sage butter transforms many dishes, even a simple chicken dish and once you add sage butter to pasta, potatoes or pierogies you won't go back! Once you pick your herbs stick them in a jar of water so they keep for a couple of days and just snip off and use as needed! Filling our homes with "herb" houseplants is the easiest and cheapest way to start cooking with herbs but that will be for another blog but take a look at all the amazing countertop and stylish indoor garden systems available these days! Indoor gardening is becoming the hot new thing to do! Thank you for following my journey to writing a book series!
Stay balanced, LeeAnna
